About half an hour from central Rome lies a park of almost fifteen thousand hectares where streams have carved gorges into the tufa, footpaths lead to hidden waterfalls and Etruscan ruins surface among the woods. This is the Veio Regional Park (Parco di Veio), and Formello, a medieval village about 28 km by road north of the city centre, is one of its finest gateways. This guide covers what you need for a walk: the best trails, the Valle del Sorbo with the Mola and Olmetti waterfalls, what is closed at the moment, how to get there, where to leave the car, when to go and what to bring.

What is Veio Park
The Veio Park is a protected natural area of the Lazio Region. It covers about 14,984 hectares, making it one of the largest parks in the region. It was created by Regional Law no. 29 of 1997 and takes in the land of nine municipalities: Campagnano di Roma, Castelnuovo di Porto, Formello, Magliano Romano, Mazzano Romano, Morlupo, Riano, Sacrofano and part of the City of Rome, to the north of the capital, between the Via Cassia and the Via Flaminia.

Here nature and archaeology live side by side. The name says it all: this was the heart of the Agro Veientano, the territory of the ancient Etruscan city of Veii, Rome's powerful rival until its conquest in 396 BC under Furius Camillus. In the woods and valleys of the park there are necropolises, remains of the ancient city, stretches of aqueducts cut into the tufa and old roads. Walking here means crossing a landscape that is both natural and deeply historical.
For the story of the Etruscan city, read Veii, the Etruscan rival of Rome; for the long-distance route that crosses this land, the Via Francigena at Formello.
Formello is one of the park's municipalities and a convenient gateway with plenty to offer. For its Etruscan and medieval heritage there is our history of Formello from the Etruscans to the Middle Ages (in Italian).
The best walks from Formello
The park has routes for every level, from gentle strolls to more demanding hikes. Veio's charm is its variety: open meadows give way to shady woods, streams and ancient remains. Many routes follow the network of ditches and streams that have cut the valleys into the tufa, creating gorges that are surprising so close to a city.

From Formello the best known and best loved walk is the descent into the Valle del Sorbo to the Cascata della Mola. It follows an easy dirt track beside the stream, so it suits people who are not experienced walkers. From there you can reach the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sorbo and join stretches of the Via Francigena. A second hiking area, also in Formello, is the Selvotta, with the Cascata degli Olmetti and its Etruscan aqueduct. For longer walks there are the CAI trails that cross the whole park.
The Valle del Sorbo and the Cascata della Mola
The Valle del Sorbo is Formello's main natural attraction and one of the wildest areas in the whole Veio Park. It is a broad valley where meadows and small oak woods alternate along the Fosso della Mola (further downstream called the Valchetta), which here winds through magnificent gorges. Because of its environmental value the valley is protected as a Site of Community Importance, part of the "Valle del Cremera, Zona del Sorbo" site in the EU Natura 2000 network.
The best known spot in the valley is the Cascata della Mola. The name recalls the old water mill (mola), whose ruins stand beside the falls: stone, greenery and the rush of the Fosso della Mola make a scene that seems out of time. It is the signature walk of the area, ideal for a morning outdoors.

For access points and precautions on the route there is our detailed page Cascata della Mola a Formello: come arrivare (in Italian).
At a glance: walking down to the Cascata della Mola
- Start
- Centre of Formello, towards the Valle del Sorbo
- Route
- Dirt track along the Fosso della Mola
- Waymarks
- CAI path 207C (Veio Park Authority)
- Difficulty
- Suitable for non-experts and families
- Surface
- Dirt, slippery after rain
- What to see
- Waterfall, ruins of the mill, Sanctuary of the Sorbo
The starting point is in the village: from the main square of Formello take Viale Umberto I and head down towards the Sorbo, as far as an area where you can leave the car and continue on foot. The track follows the stream to the waterfall and the remains of the mill. Combining the waterfall and the sanctuary in a single loop is the best way to take in the spirit of this corner of the park.
The Cascata degli Olmetti
Less well known but very striking is the Cascata degli Olmetti, in the Selvotta area, also in Formello. Here the waterfall coincides with the point where the Fosso degli Olmetti re-emerges, where an ancient Etruscan aqueduct cut into the tufa comes back into the light. The waterfall is the visible end of a piece of hydraulic engineering more than two thousand years old, one of many that supplied ancient Veii.
It is a perfect outing if you want nature and archaeology together. From the car park of the Parco Natura La Selvotta a short path leads down to the stream and the waterfall. As with the Valle del Sorbo, check the state of the path before you go and wear suitable shoes, because the ground near the water is often damp.
The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sorbo
In the heart of the Valle del Sorbo, on a rocky spur above the meadows, stands the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sorbo, built on the ruins of a medieval castle. It sits on the boundary between Formello and Campagnano di Roma and has drawn local pilgrims for centuries.

The sanctuary brings nature and spirituality together, one of the reasons this part of the park is so popular. You reach it on foot from the valley, and it fits naturally into a loop with the Cascata della Mola. The site has its own page: Il Santuario della Madonna del Sorbo a Formello (in Italian).
CAI trails and longer routes
The park's official routes are the numbered paths of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI), shown on the Park Authority's hiking map: the descent from Formello to the Cascata della Mola, for example, is path 207C. For longer walks the CAI network links the Valle del Sorbo with the other municipalities of the protected area, often following the network of streams that carved the valleys into the tufa.

Before tackling the more demanding routes, look at the official trail map on the Park Authority website and check the state of the paths. One long route that crosses this area is the Via Francigena, which passes through Formello and the Veio area.
Current closures (checked on 29/10/2026 on the Park Authority website): the Veio Archaeological Park is closed to the public and the stretch of the Via Francigena between Campetti and the Mola di Isola Farnese is closed by Park Authority order no. T00008 of 13/02/2026 (see the notice on our Via Francigena page); path 207g from Le Rughe is blocked at Viale Romania by an order of the Mayor of Formello. The Cascata della Mola at Formello, in the Valle del Sorbo, is not affected.
Tip: stay on the marked paths, especially in the gorges and near streams, where improvising can be dangerous, and take the official Park Authority map with you on longer routes.
Plants, wildlife and birdwatching
The park's landscape is made of woods, gorges cut into the tufa, wide meadows and streams. The vegetation changes with altitude and with distance from the streams: from cooler mixed oak woods to open, sunny ground. It is home to a varied fauna, typical of the protected areas of central Italy.
Among the mammals there are several mustelids, such as the beech marten, the weasel and the badger, as well as the fox, found throughout the area, and the rarer porcupine. The tufa cliffs give shelter to many nesting birds of prey: the black kite, the buzzard, the sparrowhawk and the honey buzzard. That is why the Valle del Sorbo is a good place for birdwatching: with a little patience and quiet you can watch raptors in flight and many other birds.

Species, habitats and the best times to see them are covered in our guide Fauna e flora del Parco di Veio (in Italian).
Getting there and parking
Formello is the easiest way into the part of the park that includes the Valle del Sorbo and the waterfalls. From Rome's ring road (the Grande Raccordo Anulare, GRA) take the Via Cassia bis (Veientana) or the Via Cassia and leave at Formello, then follow the signs for the centre. The drive from Rome is short, and this closeness is what makes the park perfect for a half-day trip. If you are coming by train, our Getting here page explains the stations and buses.
For the Valle del Sorbo and the Cascata della Mola, start from the centre of Formello: from Viale Umberto I head down towards the Sorbo to the area where you can leave the car and continue on foot. For the Cascata degli Olmetti, on the other hand, the reference point is the Parco Natura La Selvotta, reached from the Santa Cornelia area. In both cases parking space is limited: at weekends and in the warmer months it pays to arrive early.
There are not many parking spaces along the access roads: arriving in the morning, especially in spring and summer, makes the difference between a relaxed start and a hunt for a space. Costs and parking rules are to be checked with the Ente Parco di Veio.
Difficulty, seasons and practical tips
The classic walks from Formello, such as the descent into the Valle del Sorbo, need no hiking experience: they follow easy dirt tracks and anyone with suitable shoes can do them. The longer links between the park's municipalities are another matter, and call for more preparation, a map and attention to the waymarks.

A few simple rules:
- Start early, especially at weekends and in the warmer months: the access points near Formello are convenient but busy.
- Wear walking shoes or at least shoes suited to dirt tracks, bring enough water and, in summer, a hat.
- Check the weather and the state of the paths before you set off, especially after a rainy spell: the stretches near the streams become muddy and slippery.
- Download or look at the official trail map and stay on the waymarked routes.
- Combine the walk with a visit to the village: history and nature on the same day.
Spring and autumn are the golden seasons, for walking and for watching wildlife: pleasant temperatures, strong colours and more water in the streams, which makes the waterfalls fuller. In summer the park is best early in the morning and on the shaded stretches, while winter brings quiet days but calls for care on the damp ground and with the short daylight.
Park rules, picnics and families
The Veio Park is a protected area and asks for respect. The rules are common sense and those of the Lazio Region's protected areas: do not leave litter, do not light fires outside any equipped areas, do not pick plants or disturb wildlife, keep dogs under control and stay on the waymarked paths. These precautions protect a fragile and precious environment.

For families the Valle del Sorbo is a happy choice: the walk down is short, the meadows invite a rest and children can walk safely on the dirt track, with due care near the stream. It is a lovely spot for an outdoor picnic and for introducing younger children to nature, away from city traffic.
Plan your day outdoors
A walk in the park goes well with a visit to the village and a meal: see our Where to eat page, and if you want to stay the night, Where to stay. For the Etruscan side of the story, read about Veii.
Frequently asked questions
Is Veio Park free to visit?
Yes. The Veio Regional Park is a protected area with free access: you do not need a ticket to walk the trails. Only guided visits run by associations or environmental guides, and possibly parking on private land, may have a cost. Whether parking on the access roads to the Valle del Sorbo is free is something to check with the Veio Park Authority.
Where do you park for the Valle del Sorbo?
From the main square in Formello take Viale Umberto I and then the road that goes down towards the Sorbo, as far as an area where you can leave the car and continue on foot along the dirt track. At weekends and in the warmer months it is worth arriving early, because space is limited.
How do you get to the Cascata della Mola waterfall in Formello?
Start from the centre of Formello and go down into the Valle del Sorbo along the dirt track beside the Fosso della Mola stream. The route is CAI path 207C, waymarked by the Park Authority, and it leads to the waterfall and the ruins of the old mill. You do not need to be an experienced walker.
Which are the waterfalls of Formello and how do they differ?
There are two well known waterfalls in Formello, both in the Veio Park. The Cascata della Mola is in the Valle del Sorbo, on the Fosso della Mola stream, next to the remains of an old mill. The Cascata degli Olmetti is in the Selvotta area, on the Fosso degli Olmetti, and is linked to an ancient Etruscan aqueduct cut into the tufa. They are two separate places with different access points.
Are the trails in Veio Park waymarked?
Yes. The official trails of the park are the numbered paths of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI): the descent to the Cascata della Mola is path 207C. Stay on the marked paths, especially in the gorges and near streams, and look at the official trail map on the Park Authority website before you set off.
Are the Veio Park trails suitable for families?
Yes. Several routes, such as the descent into the Valle del Sorbo, follow easy dirt tracks beside the streams and can be walked with children, with suitable shoes and care on the stretches close to the water. The valley has meadows that are ideal for a rest and a picnic.
When is the best time to visit Veio Park?
Spring and autumn are ideal: pleasant temperatures, strong colours and more water in the streams, so the waterfalls are fuller. In summer choose the shaded stretches and the early morning; after rain the paths near the streams can be muddy.
