Formello stands on the edge of the Veio Regional Park, in the Agro Veientano, the territory of the ancient Etruscan city of Veii. The medieval village gathers around Piazza San Lorenzo, overlooked by Palazzo Chigi, which grew up around a medieval tower, and by the church of San Lorenzo Martire.
There is a lot to see in a small space: the Museo dell'Agro Veientano in Palazzo Chigi, the churches of San Lorenzo Martire and San Michele Arcangelo, the Etruscan sites of Veii and Vaccareccia, and, in the park, the Valle del Sorbo with the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sorbo and the waterfalls. Each place has its own page, with sources: three are in English, the others are in Italian for now.
Closed at the moment (checked on 29 October 2026): the Veio Archaeological Park, near Isola Farnese, and the stretch of the Via Francigena between Campetti and the Mola di Isola Farnese, closed by Veio Park Authority order no. T00008 of 13 February 2026 (Park Authority notice, in Italian; for the archaeological park, Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia, in Italian). The Cascata della Mola waterfall at Formello, in the Valle del Sorbo, is not affected. Details on our Via Francigena and Veii pages.
